Switching to Whole Cow's Milk

Around 12 months, many families start offering whole cow's milk as a drink. A slow switch over a few weeks is easiest for most.

Around the first birthday, many families start offering whole cow’s milk as a drink. Most do it gradually over a couple of weeks, often in a cup, rather than all at once.

Before 12 months, cow’s milk is not the main drink. Breast milk or formula is, right up to the birthday.

Milk in food comes first

Yogurt, cheese and a splash of milk in porridge often show up on the plate before the first birthday. That is dairy as food. The switch here is about milk as a drink.

How families do it gradually

There is no single right way. These are the ones parents use most.

  • Mix and shift. Make up formula the usual way, then mix in a little cow’s milk. Change the mix over a week or two until it is all cow’s milk.
  • One feed at a time. Swap one daily formula feed for a cup of cow’s milk, then another a few days later.
  • Cup only. Offer cow’s milk only in a cup, and keep any bottles as they are until you’re ready to drop them.
  • Breastfeeding families. Many keep nursing for as long as it works for them and add cow’s milk in a cup at meals.

Make the first cups easy

  • Serve it the way your child is used to. A toddler who takes warm bottles may prefer warm milk at first.
  • Offer it with a meal or snack rather than on its own.
  • Keep the cup small. You can always pour more.
  • Don’t worry about a few days of refusals. A new taste takes time.

Which milk to buy

Most families start with plain, pasteurized whole milk. Skip flavored milks, which add sugar a toddler doesn’t need.

Toddler milks and growing-up formulas cost more and often contain added sugar. Plain milk and water are the usual drinks at this age.

Food takes the lead

After the first birthday, meals start to do more of the work and milk becomes one drink among others. Water in a cup, with meals and between them, sits alongside it.

If milk starts to replace meals, moving it to mealtimes usually helps. Food first, milk with it.

A few things families wonder about

  • Does it have to be a cup? Many families use the switch as a natural moment to retire bottles too, but you can do one change at a time.
  • What if my child prefers formula? Mixing the two for a while gives the taste time to grow on them.
  • What about family meals? Cow’s milk can join the table like any other drink.

Ask your pediatrician about the right milk for your child.
